  INFO

Teaching is gratifying, but it's certainly complex sometimes. Take a step forward whoever has ever witnessed a desperate yawn in the middle of a training session.

When the training is mandatory, the biggest challenge is to engage attendees in the lessons. We're talking about training in LABOUR RISK PREVENTION, in which boredom is the most democratic thing, affects equally to people of different educational level and to every job profile.

What if we raise the idea of training from another perspective? What if we talk about Prevention while we play?

From that point of view, we've develop Prevencard, a serious game in which the play mechanics have the goal of promoting, in a playful way, a genuine prevention culture in the workplace.

Prevencard combines the tradition of card playing, something that everyone knows, with the technology of QR codes on the back of the cards, wich provide explanation of the characters, risks and preventive measures. Thus, each deck can be used as a refresher tool.

As easy as playing a game of cards, as complex as eliciting in players' minds the need of identifying the risks, to prevent them from happening and so then protect the workers.

  RULES

  • Number of players
  • From 2 to 4.

  • Card types
  • Type Colour
    Character Black
    Risk Red
    Preventive Measure Green
  • Setup
  • Character cards are kept apart from the rest of cards and are placed on the table, face up, grouped on stacks of cards with the same number (one stack with Character "1" cards, other with "2",...). The stacks are placed beside the deck, making a row. To the other side of the deck will be located the discard pile.

Every player gets 3 cards, that will be kept hidden. The play begins after the first player have been chosen.

  • Play
  • In her turn, every player will take one card from de deck or the discard pile and will take one of the actions:

    • place, face up, a Risk card above or below the row of Character cards, only if the numbers of both cards match or the Risk card is a "common risk" (the card has no number on it). A "common" risk can be used with any Character card.
    • place a Preventive Measure card over a Risk card already on the table with matching number and letter, or matching letter if it's a "common risk". Then, the player will take the three cards (Character + Risk + Preventive Measure), place the Character aside and discard the rest (the player decides the order of the discarded cards).
    • discard one of the cards on her hands.

When the deck gets exhausted, the discard pile is taken and shuffled, making a new draw deck. The game ends when there's no more Character cards. The player with the most Character cards wins.

  • Card types
  • Type Colour
    Character Black
    Risk Red
    Preventive Measure Green
  • Setup
  • The cards are shuffled and placed on the table, face down, making a draw deck.

  • Play
  • On each turn, take 3 cards and place them face up on the table. Choose one of them, place it aside and discard the rest.

The goal is making valid "triplets" (Character + Risk +Preventive Measure with matching numbers and letter, or only letter if they're "common" risk/preventive measure).

The game ends when the draw deck gets exhausted. Your score will be the number of completed "triplets".

Tips for teachers
  • Schedule the ludic activity at the end of the training session.
  • After explaining the rules, describe some cards to the trainees and remind them that in each QR code there's a brief explanations for the cards.
  • As an option, you can ask the players to explain the Risk and Preventive Measure used to get a Character card before discarding them.
  • At the end of a game you can ask the players for any card they've seen which didn't know the explanation. Take those cards out of the deck and take advantage of the situation to review learning concepts.
